Why I built this CGPA calculator
I clearly remember the stress of placement season, constantly pulling out a physical calculator to manually multiply course credits by grade points. 1. What is the difference between SGPA and CGPA?
SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is the measure of your performance over one specific semester. It is calculated by dividing your total earned credit points for that term by the total credits registered.
CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the combined, weighted average of all your SGPAs across your entire academic program. It gives recruiters and universities a complete picture of your overall academic consistency.
2. How is the math actually done?
This calculator uses the standard weighted average formula followed by most major universities. For every subject you enter, we multiply the Subject Credits by the Grade Points you achieved.
We then sum up all those points and divide them by your total course credits. Because it is a weighted system, getting an "A" in a heavy 4-credit core subject boosts your final CGPA much more than getting an "A" in a 1-credit elective lab.
3. Converting your CGPA to a Percentage
When filling out job applications or admission forms, you will almost always be asked to provide an aggregate percentage instead of a 10-point scale number. The most universally accepted conversion method (widely used by the CBSE and many technical universities) is the 9.5 multiplier rule.
Tip: Some specific autonomous universities might use a flat multiplier of 10. Always double-check your official university guidelines if you are applying for formal higher education.

Q1: Can I calculate my CGPA if my university uses a 4-point scale?
Right now, this tool is optimized for the standard 10-point scale format used across India. The underlying math for credits is exactly the same for a 4.0 scale, but the grade mapping values (like A = 4.0) will be different.
Q2: Why does an "F" grade lower my CGPA so much?
An 'F' (Fail) grade gives you 0 grade points. Because the formula still counts the credits of that failed subject in the total denominator, getting 0 points on a 3 or 4 credit subject pulls down your overall average significantly.
